A devastating mass shooting at a home in Billings, Montana, has left eight members of the same extended family dead, including four children, after a man reportedly returned to his parents’ home during a Sunday family dinner and opened fire.

The suspect was identified by a family member as 44-year-old Alan Smith. Investigators said Smith also died after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Eight Family Members Killed

The victims represented four generations of a blended family, ranging from an elderly great-grandmother to a 7-year-old child.

Among those identified were Megan Ghekiere and her two children, Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, 7. Also killed were Ghekiere’s two stepchildren, Landon Ghekiere, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12.

Family members said the victims were gathered for their regular Sunday dinner when the shooting occurred.

Jennifer Mercer, a neighbor and family friend, described the family as extremely close and said the children had strong relationships with one another.

Charlotte Called 911

Family friend Jennifer Mercer said 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere attempted to help her family during the attack and called 911.

Mercer described Charlotte as a hero for trying to save her relatives.

The circumstances surrounding the emergency call and Charlotte’s actions remain part of the investigation, but her family wants her courage to be remembered amid the tragedy.

Alan Smith Returned to Family Home

According to family member Brad Ireland, Smith had lived with his parents for several years before they asked him to move out approximately two weeks before the shooting.

Ireland said Smith unexpectedly returned to the home on Sunday evening while the family was gathered for dinner.

He allegedly opened fire, killing his grandmother, parents, younger sister, and four children before setting the house on fire.

Smith reportedly attempted to flee the scene before being confronted by law enforcement.

Home Destroyed by Fire

Police responded to the residence Sunday evening after receiving reports of gunfire.

Officers reportedly heard shots coming from behind the home shortly before the residence became engulfed in flames.

The fire caused extensive damage to the property, complicating investigators’ efforts to examine the scene.

A neighbor, David Hiller, said he initially thought he was hearing fireworks shortly after 6 p.m. before another neighbor warned him that a shooting was occurring nearby.

Hiller later saw officers in tactical equipment taking cover behind vehicles while thick black smoke rose from the home.

Family and Community Devastated

The shooting has left the Billings community struggling to understand the loss of so many members of one family.

Mercer said the family was loving and close and that the children all got along.

The victims’ deaths have affected not only relatives and friends but also neighbors and other members of the community who knew the family.

Questions Surround Alan Smith

Ireland described Smith as a highly isolated person who spent much of his time in his room using his computer.

According to Ireland, Smith had attended Eastern Washington University but had struggled to find or maintain employment.

A search of criminal records in Montana and Washington reportedly found no previous arrests or criminal charges involving Smith.

Ireland said that, to his knowledge, Smith had never previously been physically violent, although he described him as verbally abusive.

Investigators will continue examining what led to the shooting and whether there were warning signs that could have indicated the potential for violence.

Investigation Continues

Authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting, the deaths of the eight victims, the subsequent fire, and Smith’s death.

The incident represents one of the most devastating acts of violence to strike the Billings community, particularly because so many of the victims were children and multiple generations of the same family were lost.

As investigators work to establish the full sequence of events, relatives, friends, and community members are left mourning eight lives that were taken during what should have been a routine family gathering.

The victims will be remembered as parents, children, siblings, grandparents, and loved ones whose lives were deeply connected. May their families and everyone affected by this tragedy find strength and support as they grieve.
